RCVS Recognised Specialist

What this means for your pet

An RCVS Specialist is the most qualified type of vet you can see in the UK for a specific condition. They have years of additional training beyond their veterinary degree, hold the highest-level qualifications, and are actively contributing to advancing knowledge in their field. If your pet has a complex or serious condition, a Specialist offers the deepest expertise available.

About this accreditation

The highest tier of postgraduate accreditation awarded by the RCVS. A Specialist is a veterinary surgeon who has achieved doctoral-level (Level 8) postgraduate qualifications and demonstrates active, ongoing contribution to their discipline at national and international level. It represents the pinnacle of veterinary expertise in a specific field.

Who can hold this accreditation

Must be an RCVS-registered veterinary surgeon holding an appropriate postgraduate qualification at diploma level or above (e.g. RCVS Diploma, EBVS European Specialist diploma, or AVMA-recognised specialist diploma). Must demonstrate active contribution through publishing, teaching, and engagement at national/international level. Must have completed at least 250 hours of CPD in the last five years (125 hours in their specialty). Must be actively practising and available for referral or consultation.

Referral requirement

Yes — referral from a primary care veterinary surgeon is the standard pathway. Specialists must be available for referral or consultation by veterinary colleagues. Most specialist practices require a vet referral.

Title protection

Only veterinary surgeons on the RCVS List of Specialists may use the title 'Specialist' or 'RCVS Recognised Specialist'. Using the title without being on the list is a breach of the RCVS Code of Professional Conduct. Title protection was strengthened in March 2016.
